The Locks

 

Caledonian Canal

Begun in 1803 and completed in 1822, the Caledonian Canal links the North Sea to the Irish Sea and allows a passage avoiding the perilous route around the north of Scotland.

Fort Augustus Locks

There are 29 locks along the full length of the canal. At Fort Augustus a staircase of 5 locks raise vessels from Loch Ness to the canal.
